Life Lessons: The Best Advice in Business, Marriage, Parenting and Life

Megan Young

In this episode of the Suburban Burnout

Podcast, we explored some of the most valuable advice we've received over the years in the realms of business, marriage, parenting, and life in general. This blog post will break down the wisdom shared on the podcast, offering insights and practical tips for navigating these crucial aspects of life.

Marriage:

  • "Don't go to bed angry"- This is classic advice, but it's not always realistic. It's important to allow some time to cool off and process emotions to think rationally. Avoid saying things you don't mean, but don't let issues fester either.

  • "Patience is a virtue"- This advice always seems to come from the older generation that has lived through it all and is directed at the younger generation that is antsy to experience it all. So while it is sage advice that patience is a virtue, experience can be the best teacher and there is no substitute for learning through experience.

  • "Make plans and make love"- This is simply a reminder to make time for your relationship. Whether it is date night or little rituals to show your partner you care, it is the effort necessary to keep the flame alive.

Parenting:

  • Foster a Child's Learning- Children learn from the outside world, no matter how much you try to control it. By allowing them to learn from the world around them you are building trust at an early age. Don't be so restrictive as to create a desire for the forbidden fruit or mistrust in you.

  • Be Ready to Pivot- When you become a parent you are no longer in charge of your day-to-day. Just ask anyone with a baby or toddler. Learn to be flexible with your plans because adapting to the unpredictable allows you to find control in flexibility.

  • "Love your kids for who they are, not who you want them to be"- Tell your kids you love them and consider their love languages to foster a deeper connection.

Business Advice:

  • Don't Give Up Easily- Prepare for multiple failures and don't be discouraged by micro-failures.

  • Weigh the Pros & Cons- Create a physical pros and cons list when making tough decisions. In family matters, involve everyone in the decision-making process.

  • Don't Burn Bridges- Sometimes, holding your tongue can feel inauthentic but it is the best course of action in a digital age where consequences can have lasting ripple effects.

  • "Play chess, not checkers"- Think strategically about your actions and words and how that will further your professional and personal goals.

  • Form a Board of Directors- In the book Getting to Neutral, by Trevor Moawad, he recommends forming a personal "Board of Directors" of people you trust to guide you through life's decisions.

Life:

  • Call Your Parents- Life gets busy but don't forget to call your parents and thank them for everything they did to raise you. Expressing gratitude can strengthen family bonds and appreciation.

  • Put Yourself Out There- Putting yourself out there, meeting new people, and hosting events can be intimidating. Human beings thrive on social interaction which is a fundamental part of feeling fulfilled and connected. Embrace the challenge of reaching beyond your comfort zone, as the effort to connect with others often leads to valuable experiences and personal growth.

  • Surround yourself with people in a similar stage of life- certain stages of life are best understood by those living through a similar situation. Building a support system of people in a similar stage of life allows you to create a network of support that can offer guidance, empathy, and camaraderie as you navigate the same life challenges.

Life is a journey filled with invaluable lessons that shape us into better versions of ourselves. Often, the most profound guidance arises from our own experiences and the wisdom shared by others. These nuggets of wisdom can serve as guiding lights, illuminating our path through the intricate web of life's challenges.
